What Is Private Label?

Private label refers to products made by one company and sold under another company's brand. A retailer or brand works with a manufacturer, often choosing from existing formulas or designs, and the finished product is packaged with the seller's brand.

Private label is common in supplements, skincare, cosmetics, apparel, coffee and snacks.

How It Works

A private label product usually moves through these stages:

  • The brand chooses a manufacturer and a product, sometimes with custom changes.
  • The manufacturer produces and labels the product with the brand's packaging.
  • Finished goods ship to the brand's warehouse or 3PL.
  • The brand sells through its store, marketplaces or retailers.

Why It Matters for Ecommerce Brands

Private label lets new brands launch faster, since they can build on proven formulas or designs instead of developing products from scratch. The tradeoff is that similar base products may be sold by other brands, so branding, marketing and customer experience become key differentiators.

That makes fulfillment part of the brand story. For example, a supplement brand using a private label manufacturer may share a base formula with others, but it can stand out through packaging, fast shipping and careful handling of lot numbers and expiration dates.

Brands should keep clear records of production batches from their manufacturer, since lot and expiration details matter for product quality and any recalls. Receiving inventory into a warehouse that tracks lots makes those details usable.

Private label brands also benefit from planning inventory with lead times in mind. Manufacturers often have minimum order quantities and production schedules, so knowing current sell-through rates from the warehouse helps brands reorder before running out and avoid gaps in availability.

What is the difference between private label and white label?

In everyday use, private label usually means a manufacturer makes products for one brand, while white label often means a generic product sold by many brands. White-label fulfillment is a separate shipping term.

Do private label products need lot tracking?

For products like supplements and cosmetics, tracking lots and expiration dates is important for quality and recalls.

Can a 3PL receive inventory directly from my manufacturer?

Yes. Many brands ship finished goods from the manufacturer straight to their 3PL.
