What Is Wholesale Fulfillment?

Wholesale fulfillment is the work of getting a brand's products to the stores and resellers that buy them in bulk. The buyer might be an independent boutique ordering two cases, a regional chain ordering pallets, or a wholesale marketplace sending orders on behalf of many shops.

It is a form of B2B fulfillment focused on stocking other businesses' shelves.

How It Works

A wholesale order typically moves through these steps:

  • The buyer places an order through email, a wholesale platform or EDI.
  • The warehouse picks by case or carton and checks quantities.
  • Cartons are labeled and a packing list is included.
  • The shipment goes out by parcel or freight, depending on size.
  • Tracking or shipping details are shared with the buyer.

Why It Matters for Ecommerce Brands

Wholesale lets brands reach shoppers who may never visit their website, and it can smooth out revenue between DTC campaigns. But wholesale buyers judge brands on reliability: complete orders, correct case packs and on-time arrival.

Consider an apparel brand selling to 30 boutiques. Each store expects the right sizes, in the right quantities, clearly labeled and arriving before a season starts. A few short shipments can mean lost reorders, even if the product sells well.

Running wholesale from the same inventory as DTC helps brands see true stock levels and decide how to allocate units when demand is high. Splitting stock across separate locations for each channel often leads to one channel running out while another sits on extra units.

Clear lead times also matter. Agreeing with buyers on how quickly orders will ship, and sharing that with the warehouse, helps avoid rushed orders and missed delivery windows during busy seasons.
