What Is a Tracking Number?

A tracking number is a unique identifier a carrier assigns to each package when a shipping label is created. It appears on the label as a barcode and as a string of letters and numbers. Anyone with the number can look up the shipment's status on the carrier's website or through the brand's order tracking page.

How It Works

When the warehouse prints a label, the carrier generates a tracking number tied to that package. Each time the package is scanned, for example at pickup, at sorting hubs, out for delivery and at delivery, a new event is added to its tracking history. The fulfillment system sends the tracking number back to the online store, which typically emails it to the customer automatically.

Tracking statuses usually include label created, picked up or in transit, out for delivery and delivered, plus exceptions such as delays or address problems.

  • Label created: the carrier knows the package exists but has not received it.
  • In transit: the package has been scanned into the carrier network.
  • Out for delivery: the package is on the local delivery vehicle.
  • Delivered: the carrier has recorded a delivery scan.

Why It Matters for Ecommerce Brands

Tracking numbers reduce uncertainty for customers and support teams. When customers can see where their order is, they are less likely to contact support asking about it, and when there is a problem, the tracking history helps identify where it happened.

For example, if a customer reports a missing package, the brand can check whether it was marked delivered, when and where, before deciding on a reship or a carrier claim. Making sure tracking numbers sync to the store quickly and that shipping confirmation emails are clear is a simple way to improve the post-purchase experience.

FAQ

Common Questions

Still unsure? Call (310) 415-7759 and talk to the team that packs your orders.

Why does my tracking say label created but not moving?

This usually means the label was printed but the carrier has not yet scanned the package, often because it is waiting for pickup.

Does every shipment get a tracking number?

Most parcel services include tracking, though some very low-cost mail options offer limited scan detail.

Can a package be delivered without a delivery scan?

It happens occasionally. If tracking stalls, contact the carrier, since missed scans do not always mean a lost package.
