What Is a Stockout?

A stockout, also called an out-of-stock, is the moment a SKU runs out of available inventory. Customers either cannot buy it, or they can buy it but the order cannot ship until more stock arrives.

Stockouts can affect a single variant, such as one size of a shoe, or an entire product line.

How It Works

Stockouts usually come from a gap between demand and supply. Common causes include sales outpacing forecasts, supplier delays, reorder points set too low, inaccurate inventory records and inbound shipments that take longer to receive than expected.

For example, a streetwear brand drops a new hoodie and a creator posts about it. Medium and large sell out in two days while the reorder takes four weeks. Without enough safety stock or a pre-order option, those sizes sit out of stock for nearly a month.

  • Track sales velocity by SKU and variant.
  • Use reorder points and safety stock.
  • Shorten the time between delivery and sellable inventory.

Why It Matters for Ecommerce Brands

Every stockout is lost revenue, and often a lost customer. Shoppers who cannot find what they want may buy from a competitor instead. Ads keep spending on products that cannot be purchased, and marketplace channels may lower the visibility of listings that frequently go out of stock.

Preventing stockouts comes down to good planning and good data. Set reorder points with realistic lead times, hold safety stock for bestsellers and keep inventory counts accurate. Fast receiving also helps, since inventory sitting on a dock is not available to sell.

What is the difference between a stockout and a backorder?

A stockout means no inventory is available. A backorder is an order accepted during a stockout that will ship once stock is replenished.

How do stockouts affect marketplace listings?

Frequent stockouts can hurt a listing's visibility and performance on some marketplaces, and they waste ad spend on products that cannot be bought.

How can I prevent stockouts?

Set reorder points based on real lead times, hold safety stock for bestsellers, keep inventory records accurate and get inbound stock received quickly.
