What Is a Service Level Agreement (SLA)?

A service level agreement, or SLA, defines the standards a service provider is expected to meet and how performance is measured. In fulfillment, SLAs usually describe how quickly orders ship, how accurately they are filled, and how fast inventory is received.

An SLA may be a formal contract term or a set of stated operating standards, depending on the provider.

How It Works

Common fulfillment SLA measures include:

  • Order cutoff and ship time: the time by which orders must be placed to ship the same day.
  • Order accuracy: the share of orders shipped with the correct items and quantities.
  • Receiving time: how quickly inbound inventory is counted and made available.
  • Response time: how quickly questions and issues are answered.

Why It Matters for Ecommerce Brands

SLAs turn vague promises into specific expectations. Fast shipping means little unless it is defined, such as orders placed before a set cutoff leaving the same business day.

For example, if a brand promises next-day dispatch at checkout, it needs to know the warehouse's cutoff time and whether weekends are included. If orders placed Friday evening do not leave until Monday, the brand should set customer expectations accordingly.

When reviewing an SLA, brands should look at how each measure is defined, how it is reported, and what happens if it is missed. Clear definitions, such as whether accuracy is measured per order or per unit, make comparisons between providers fair.

SLAs are most useful when both sides share data. Brands that review ship times and accuracy reports regularly, rather than only after a problem, can spot trends early and work with the provider to fix them before customers notice anything is wrong.

How is order accuracy measured?

Usually as the percentage of orders shipped with the correct items and quantities, though definitions vary by provider.
