Shipping zones are a system carriers use to measure how far a package travels. Instead of pricing every route individually, carriers group destinations into numbered zones based on distance from the origin ZIP code. Domestic zones in the US commonly run from Zone 1 or 2 for nearby addresses up to Zone 8 for the farthest points in the contiguous states, with additional zones for places like Alaska, Hawaii and US territories.
Zones are calculated from the shipping origin, so the same customer address can be a low zone from one warehouse and a high zone from another. When a label is created, the carrier looks up the zone between the origin and destination ZIP codes and combines it with the billable weight and service level to set the price. Higher zones usually mean higher postage and, for ground services, longer transit times.
Shipping zones explain why warehouse location matters so much for cost and speed. A brand shipping from one coast to customers on the other will see many orders in higher zones.
For example, a brand whose customers are concentrated in California, Arizona and Washington will often see lower zones and faster ground delivery when shipping from a West Coast warehouse. A brand with customers spread evenly across the country can review its order data by zone to decide whether one location fits or whether splitting inventory makes sense. Looking at a zone map for your origin ZIP code is a simple first step.
