Same-day shipping is a fulfillment commitment that orders received before a set cutoff time leave the warehouse that same business day. It is about when the order ships, not when it arrives. It is different from same-day delivery, where the customer receives the package the day they order it.
The warehouse processes all orders received before the cutoff, picking, packing and labeling them in time for the carrier's pickup. From there, transit time depends on the shipping method the customer chose and the distance to their address. A ground order shipped the same day can still take several days to arrive, but it starts moving immediately instead of waiting in a queue.
Shipping the same day removes a full day or more from the total time between purchase and delivery, often without paying for a faster carrier service. Faster delivery tends to reduce 'where is my order' messages, supports better reviews and makes delivery promises at checkout more believable.
For example, a customer orders a protein powder at 10 AM on a Tuesday. With same-day shipping, the package is with the carrier that afternoon. With a 24 to 48 hour processing time, it might not leave until Thursday, adding two days to the wait without any change in carrier speed. For launches, gifting seasons and subscription renewals, that difference is noticeable to customers.
