What Is Return Rate?

Return rate measures how often customers send products back. It is usually expressed as a percentage and can be calculated by units, orders or revenue. Return rates vary widely by product category, price point and sales channel, so the most useful comparison is often a brand's own return rate over time or across its own products.

How It Works

The basic formula is simple:

  • Unit return rate = units returned divided by units sold, multiplied by 100.
  • Order return rate = orders with at least one return divided by total orders, multiplied by 100.
  • Revenue return rate = value of refunded sales divided by total sales, multiplied by 100.

For example, if a brand sells 2,000 units in a month and 150 come back, its unit return rate is 7.5 percent. Because returns can arrive weeks after the sale, many brands measure returns against the period in which the original orders were placed, not the period in which the returns arrived. Breaking the rate down by SKU, size, channel and return reason shows where the problem is concentrated.

Why It Matters for Ecommerce Brands

Return rate directly affects profitability. Every return can mean a lost sale, return shipping, warehouse processing and sometimes an unsellable unit. A rising return rate often points to a specific fix, such as a misleading product photo, an inaccurate size chart or packaging that lets items break in transit. Tracking return rate alongside return reasons helps brands decide where to invest, and it helps forecast how much inventory will come back after big sales events like holiday promotions.

FAQ

Common Questions

Still unsure? Call (310) 415-7759 and talk to the team that packs your orders.

What is a good return rate for an online store?

It depends heavily on the category and price point, so there is no single benchmark. The most useful target is improving the brand's own rate over time and by SKU.

Should return rate be measured by units or orders?

Both are useful. Unit return rate shows how many products come back, while order return rate shows how many customers had an issue.

How can a brand lower its return rate?

Accurate product descriptions, detailed size guides, better photos and sturdier packaging all help. Reviewing return reasons by SKU shows which fix matters most.
