What Is Restocking?

Restocking means putting products back into inventory so they can be sold again. In ecommerce fulfillment, the term most often describes what happens to a customer return that passes inspection: it is put back on the shelf and added to available stock. Restocking can also refer to replenishing pick locations from reserve storage. A related term, the restocking fee, is a charge some sellers deduct from a refund to cover the cost of processing a return.

How It Works

Restocking a returned item usually involves several steps:

  • Inspection: the item is checked for damage, missing parts, signs of use, broken seals or an expired date.
  • Grading: the item is marked as sellable, needing rework or unsellable.
  • Repackaging: if needed, the item is refolded, rebagged or relabeled so it looks new.
  • Put-away: the item is scanned into a specific bin or location in the warehouse management system.
  • Inventory update: the available quantity syncs to sales channels so the unit can be sold again.

For example, a returned pair of leggings with tags still attached might be refolded, placed in a fresh polybag and scanned back into its bin, making it available on the brand's Shopify store the same day it is processed.

Why It Matters for Ecommerce Brands

Every returned unit that can be restocked is revenue recovered instead of a loss. Fast, accurate restocking keeps inventory counts correct, reduces unnecessary reorders and prevents overselling. It matters most for products with tight margins or limited runs, where each unit counts. Brands should also set clear rules for what qualifies as sellable, especially for cosmetics, supplements and other products where hygiene, seals and expiration dates matter.

FAQ

Common Questions

Still unsure? Call (310) 415-7759 and talk to the team that packs your orders.

What is a restocking fee?

A restocking fee is an amount some sellers deduct from a customer's refund to cover the cost of processing a return. Whether to charge one is a policy decision, and it can affect customer satisfaction.

Can opened cosmetics be restocked?

Most brands do not restock opened cosmetics or personal care items for hygiene reasons. They are usually set aside, written off or handled according to the brand's own rules.

How quickly should returns be restocked?

As quickly as possible, since unprocessed returns are inventory that cannot be sold. A defined processing schedule with the warehouse helps keep stock levels accurate.
