What Is a Pre-Order?

A pre-order lets customers buy a product before it is available. The brand collects the order, and sometimes the payment, ahead of launch, then ships everything once the inventory is ready.

Pre-orders are common for new product launches, limited drops, books, crowdfunding rewards and new seasonal collections.

How It Works

The brand lists the product with a clear expected ship date and a pre-order label. Orders accumulate in the store and are held in the order management or warehouse system. When the inventory is received, the held orders are released and fulfilled, often in a single large wave.

For example, a book publisher opens pre-orders for a new title two months before release. When the printed books arrive at the warehouse, a few thousand orders are released at once and shipped over a short period so customers receive the book close to launch day.

  • Show the expected ship date on the product page.
  • Share pre-order volume with your 3PL before inventory arrives.
  • Communicate quickly if a delay happens.

Why It Matters for Ecommerce Brands

Pre-orders help brands measure demand before committing to large production runs and can bring in cash earlier. They also build momentum for launches, giving marketing a clear moment to work toward.

The fulfillment side needs planning. A large wave of orders arriving all at once puts pressure on receiving, picking and packing. Brands should share expected volume and arrival dates with their 3PL in advance, and keep customers updated if the ship date moves.
