Pick and pack is the core of ecommerce fulfillment. When a customer places an order, a warehouse team member locates each item on the shelf (the pick), confirms it is the right product and quantity, then places it in a box or mailer with any packing materials and inserts (the pack). The finished parcel gets a shipping label and moves to the outbound area for carrier collection.
Most modern warehouses run pick and pack through a warehouse management system (WMS). Orders flow in from the online store, the WMS assigns them to pickers, and each picker follows a route to the right bin locations. Scanning each item's barcode at the pick confirms that the SKU matches the order before it ever reaches the packing station.
At the packing station, the packer verifies the contents again, chooses the right box or mailer, adds void fill if needed, includes inserts such as packing slips or thank-you cards, seals the package, weighs it and prints the label. A typical flow looks like this:
Pick and pack is where most fulfillment errors happen and where most fulfillment cost sits. A mis-pick means a refund or reship, an unhappy customer and sometimes a bad review. Slow packing means orders miss the carrier pickup and arrive later than promised.
For example, a skincare brand selling a three-item routine needs all three products, in the right shades or sizes, in one box. Getting that right every time, quickly, is what separates a dependable 3PL from a frustrating one. Pick and pack fees are also usually charged per order and per additional item, so understanding the pricing helps brands forecast costs as order volume grows.

A pick and pack fee typically covers pulling the items, packing them and preparing the parcel for shipment. Postage, packaging materials and storage are often billed separately, so check what each 3PL includes.
Most 3PLs charge a base fee per order plus a smaller fee for each additional item in the same order. Some offer lower per-order rates at higher monthly volumes.
The most reliable method is barcode scanning at the pick and at the pack, so the system flags a wrong SKU or quantity before the parcel is sealed.
