What Is a Packing Slip?

A packing slip, sometimes called a packing list, is a printed document placed inside or attached to a package. It lists what the shipment contains, typically including the order number, item names, SKUs, quantities and the ship-to address. Unlike an invoice, a packing slip usually does not need to show prices, which makes it suitable for gift orders.

How It Works

When an order is packed, the warehouse management system generates a packing slip from the order data. The packer prints it, checks the items in the box against it and places it inside the package or in a pouch on the outside. Many brands customize their slips with a logo, a thank-you note, return instructions or a discount code for the next purchase.

Common contents include:

  • Order number and order date
  • Item names, SKUs and quantities shipped
  • Shipping address and sometimes billing address
  • Notes on backordered or separately shipped items
  • Return instructions or a link to a returns portal

Why It Matters for Ecommerce Brands

The packing slip helps customers confirm they received everything and makes returns easier because the order details are right there. It also helps the warehouse: packers compare the slip with the box contents as a final check. For B2B and wholesale shipments, retailers often require packing slips in a specific format so their receiving teams can process deliveries quickly.

For example, a coffee brand might print a slip showing two bags of whole bean and one bag of ground, with a note that a backordered mug ships separately. That simple note can prevent a 'missing item' support ticket. Treating the slip as part of the customer experience, not just paperwork, is an easy win.

FAQ

Common Questions

Still unsure? Call (310) 415-7759 and talk to the team that packs your orders.

Is a packing slip the same as an invoice?

No. An invoice is a request for payment with prices and terms, while a packing slip lists the contents of a shipment and often leaves prices off.

Should prices appear on a packing slip?

Usually not for gift orders. Many brands hide prices on all slips so any order can double as a gift.

Can I customize my packing slip?

Most fulfillment systems let you add a logo, messages, return instructions and promotional codes to the slip template.
