What Is Order Fulfillment Time?

Order fulfillment time measures the speed of a brand's fulfillment process. Most commonly it refers to the time between when an order is placed and when it leaves the warehouse with the carrier, sometimes called processing time or dock-to-ship time. Some brands also track total order-to-delivery time, which adds carrier transit.

How It Works

The order cutoff time sets the starting point. Orders placed before the cutoff can ship the same day, while later orders roll to the next business day. Warehouses track this as a service level, such as the percentage of orders shipped the same day.

Fulfillment time includes several steps, each of which can add delay:

  • Order import: the order syncs from the store to the warehouse system.
  • Picking: items are pulled from storage and verified.
  • Packing: items are packed, weighed and labeled.
  • Pickup: the carrier collects the package and scans it.

Why It Matters for Ecommerce Brands

Fulfillment time is the part of delivery speed a brand controls most directly. Carrier transit depends on distance and service level, but processing time depends on the warehouse. Cutting a day of processing makes every shipping method faster, from economy ground to expedited air.

For example, a brand with a 48-hour processing time and four-day ground transit delivers in about six days. Switching to same-day shipping, with the same carrier service, brings that closer to four. Brands can measure fulfillment time by comparing order timestamps with carrier pickup scans and should watch it closely during sales, launches and peak season, when volume spikes can create backlogs.

What is a good order fulfillment time?

Many ecommerce brands aim to ship within one business day, and same-day shipping for orders before a cutoff is a strong standard.

Does fulfillment time include shipping transit?

Usually it means time until the order ships. Order-to-delivery time is a separate measure that includes carrier transit.

How can I measure fulfillment time?

Compare each order's placement time with the carrier's first pickup scan, then track the average and the share shipped the same day.
