What Is an Order Cutoff Time?

An order cutoff time is the latest time of day an order can be received and still ship on the same day. Orders placed after the cutoff move to the next business day's queue. Cutoff times are set by the warehouse or 3PL based on how long it takes to process orders and when carriers pick up parcels.

How It Works

A warehouse works backward from its carrier pickup times. If the last pickup is in the late afternoon, the warehouse needs enough time before then to pick, pack and label every order that came in. The cutoff is set early enough that orders received before it can reliably make that pickup.

Cutoffs are usually stated in a specific time zone and apply on business days. Weekend and holiday orders typically ship the next business day. Some operations set different cutoffs for different service levels, or temporarily adjust them during peak season when volume spikes.

  • Cutoff times are based on carrier pickup schedules.
  • They are stated in a specific time zone.
  • Orders after the cutoff ship the next business day.
  • Holidays and weekends usually follow the next-business-day rule.

Why It Matters for Ecommerce Brands

Cutoff times directly shape the delivery promise a brand can make at checkout. A later cutoff gives customers more of the day to order and still have their package leave today, which shortens the time between purchase and delivery.

For example, if a West Coast brand's cutoff is early afternoon Pacific, a customer in New York ordering in the late afternoon Eastern time can still have their order ship the same day. Brands should display the cutoff clearly on product pages and in shipping policies, and adjust holiday shipping deadlines to match it, so customers know exactly when to order to receive gifts on time.

FAQ

Common Questions

Still unsure? Call (310) 415-7759 and talk to the team that packs your orders.

What happens to orders placed after the cutoff?

They are processed in the next business day's queue and typically ship that day.

Do cutoff times apply on weekends?

Usually cutoffs apply on business days only, so weekend orders ship on the next business day. Check your 3PL's schedule.

Should I show my cutoff time to customers?

Yes. Stating it on your shipping page or at checkout sets clear expectations and can encourage customers to order sooner.
