A master carton is the outermost box in a product's packaging hierarchy. It holds individual units, inner packs or smaller cases and is designed to protect goods during freight and storage.
Master cartons are what you typically see stacked on pallets when inventory arrives from a manufacturer.
The manufacturer packs products into master cartons, seals them and labels the outside with key details: SKU, quantity, lot number, carton dimensions and weight, and often a carton barcode. Master cartons are then stacked and wrapped on pallets or shipped loose as parcels.
When a master carton arrives at a warehouse, the receiving team scans or reads the label, verifies the count and records the inventory. For example, a master carton might hold four inner boxes of 12 tumblers, for 48 units total. If the label is clear and the count is consistent, receiving is quick. If the carton holds several SKUs, each must be counted separately.
Well-packed master cartons protect inventory, lower freight costs by using space efficiently and make receiving fast and accurate. Poor packaging leads to crushed boxes, damaged products and slow, manual counts.
Single-SKU master cartons with clear labels are the easiest to receive. Mixed cartons, which contain more than one SKU, are sometimes unavoidable for small runs or samples, but they take longer to process. Many 3PLs price mixed cartons differently from full pallets for that reason.
