What Is Last-Mile Delivery?

Last-mile delivery is the final leg of a package's journey, from the local delivery station or post office to the recipient's address. Although it covers the shortest distance, it is often considered the most complex and costly part of shipping, because each stop is a separate address with its own access issues, timing and delivery instructions.

How It Works

After a parcel moves through a carrier's long-haul network and regional hubs, it arrives at a local facility near the destination. There it is sorted onto a route and loaded into a delivery vehicle. The driver delivers it to the door, a mailbox, a locker, a mailroom or a pickup point, and the carrier records a delivery scan, sometimes with a photo.

Some shippers use regional or local carriers that specialize in last-mile service in certain areas, and national carriers sometimes hand off packages to partners for the final step.

  • Common challenges: missing unit numbers, gated communities and access codes.
  • Delivery exceptions: no safe place to leave a package or a recipient unavailable.
  • Theft risk: packages left on porches can go missing.

Why It Matters for Ecommerce Brands

The last mile is the part of shipping customers actually see. A late, damaged or missing package at the door shapes how they feel about the brand, regardless of what happened earlier in the journey.

For example, a customer who receives a package left in the rain may blame the brand, not the carrier. Brands can improve last-mile outcomes by validating addresses at checkout, sending clear tracking notifications, offering signature options for high-value orders and using sturdy packaging that holds up to doorstep conditions. Monitoring delivery exceptions also helps identify problem areas or carriers.

FAQ

Common Questions

Still unsure? Call (310) 415-7759 and talk to the team that packs your orders.

Why is last-mile delivery so expensive?

Each stop is a separate address with its own travel time and access challenges, so costs per package are high compared with long-haul transport.

Who handles last-mile delivery?

Usually the same carrier that moved the package, though some carriers hand off to regional or local partners for the final step.

How can brands reduce last-mile problems?

Validate addresses, send tracking updates, use durable packaging and offer signature options for valuable orders.
