What Is Kitting?

Kitting is the warehouse process of combining separate products into one unit. The finished kit can be a gift set, a starter bundle, a subscription box, a PR package or a sample pack.

Kits are often assembled ahead of time and stored as their own SKU, which means they can be picked just as quickly as any single product.

How It Works

The brand defines the kit, including which component SKUs go inside, the quantity of each, the packaging and any inserts. The warehouse assembles the kits in batches, reduces the component inventory and adds the finished kits to stock under the kit SKU.

For example, a skincare brand creates a holiday set with a cleanser, a serum and a moisturizer in a branded box with a gift card. The warehouse builds 1,000 sets in advance. When holiday orders arrive, pickers grab one finished set instead of three separate items.

Some kits are built on demand at the time of the order instead of in advance. That works for low volume or highly customized kits but takes longer per order.

  • Define the bill of materials for each kit.
  • Build in advance for high-volume or seasonal kits.
  • Give each finished kit its own SKU.

Why It Matters for Ecommerce Brands

Kitting lets brands create new products and price points without new manufacturing. Gift sets, bundles and starter kits can raise average order value and make great launch or seasonal offers.

Pre-built kits also speed up fulfillment during busy periods and reduce errors, because the components are checked once during assembly instead of on every order. Clear kit instructions and accurate component counts keep the process smooth.

FAQ

Common Questions

Still unsure? Call (310) 415-7759 and talk to the team that packs your orders.

What is the difference between kitting and bundling?

Bundling is the merchandising decision to sell items together. Kitting is the physical warehouse work of assembling those items into one package.

Should kits be pre-built or assembled per order?

Pre-built kits are faster to ship and work well for predictable, high-volume sets. Assembling per order suits low volume or highly customized kits.

Can kitting include inserts and custom packaging?

Yes. Kits commonly include branded boxes, inserts, thank-you cards or gift notes as part of the assembly.
