An inner pack is a middle layer of packaging. It sits between the individual unit and the full case. For example, a case of 48 lip balms might hold eight inner packs of six.
Inner packs are common for small items, fragile products and goods sold to retailers that want to order in quantities smaller than a full case.
The manufacturer groups a set number of units into an inner pack, using a small box, a shrink-wrapped bundle or a polybag. Several inner packs are then placed inside a case or master carton. Each inner pack may carry its own barcode and quantity label.
This creates a packaging hierarchy that warehouses and retailers can use. A retailer might order by the inner pack, a warehouse might count by the case and a DTC order might pull a single unit. For example, a sock brand could pack three pairs per inner pack and twelve inner packs per case, so one case holds 36 pairs.
Inner packs make it easier to sell and ship in flexible quantities. Wholesale buyers who cannot take a full case can order a few inner packs. Small items are protected and stay organized, which reduces damage and miscounts.
For warehouse operations, labeled inner packs also speed up receiving and replenishment, because staff can count groups instead of loose units. The key is consistency: the same number of units in every inner pack and clear labels showing what is inside.
