What Is a Freight Forwarder?

A freight forwarder organizes shipments on behalf of a business. Instead of a brand booking space with an ocean carrier, an airline and a trucking company separately, a forwarder coordinates the whole move. Forwarders typically do not own the ships or planes; they work with carriers and use their relationships to book space, consolidate cargo and manage paperwork.

How It Works

A freight forwarder usually handles:

  • Quotes and booking: comparing routes and carriers and booking ocean, air or ground transport.
  • Consolidation: combining smaller shipments into shared containers when a full container is not needed.
  • Documentation: preparing or coordinating bills of lading and shipping documents.
  • Coordination: working with the customs broker, the port and the trucking company for delivery.
  • Tracking: keeping the shipper informed as the cargo moves.

For example, a Melbourne apparel brand moving inventory to the US might hire a forwarder to pick up cartons from its factory, book ocean freight to Los Angeles, coordinate with the brand's customs broker, and arrange trucking to the brand's warehouse.

Why It Matters for Ecommerce Brands

For brands without an in-house logistics team, a freight forwarder makes international shipping manageable. Forwarders can help choose between faster, more expensive air freight and slower, cheaper ocean freight, and they often secure better rates than a small shipper could alone. Choosing a forwarder experienced with the destination port and the brand's product type reduces the risk of delays. Brands should also make sure the forwarder, the customs broker and the receiving warehouse share delivery details in advance so inventory arrives ready to be received.

FAQ

Common Questions

Still unsure? Call (310) 415-7759 and talk to the team that packs your orders.

Is a freight forwarder the same as a carrier?

No. A carrier physically moves the goods, while a forwarder arranges the shipment and books space with carriers on the shipper's behalf.

Does a freight forwarder clear customs?

Some forwarders offer customs brokerage or work with partner brokers, but customs clearance is a separate service handled by a licensed customs broker.

When should a brand use a freight forwarder?

Most brands use one when importing inventory internationally, especially for ocean freight, where booking, consolidation and documents are more complex.
