What Is an FDA-Registered Facility?

An FDA-registered facility is a location that has submitted a registration to the US Food and Drug Administration. Facilities that manufacture, process, pack or hold food for consumption in the United States, which includes dietary supplements, are generally required to register. Other FDA-regulated product categories have their own registration or listing rules. Registration gives the FDA a record of where regulated products are handled so it can communicate with facilities and respond to safety issues.

How It Works

Registration is an administrative step, and it is important to understand what it does and does not mean:

  • Registration is not approval: the FDA does not approve, certify or endorse a facility because it is registered.
  • Renewal: food facility registrations must be renewed periodically, so registration status should be current.
  • Inspections: registered facilities can be subject to FDA inspection.
  • Separate requirements: registration does not replace other obligations, such as labeling rules or good manufacturing practices that apply to the product's maker.

For example, a supplement brand that manufactures through a contract manufacturer may store its finished goods in a 3PL warehouse. Because that warehouse holds food products, it is typically expected to be FDA-registered.

Why It Matters for Ecommerce Brands

Brands selling supplements, snacks, coffee, tea and similar products often look for an FDA-registered warehouse because holding these products is a regulated activity. Some retailers and marketplaces also ask about a warehouse's registration during onboarding. Brands should treat registration as a baseline and still review their own product-specific obligations, ideally with a regulatory advisor, since requirements depend on the product and the brand's role in the supply chain. This is general information, not legal or regulatory advice.

FAQ

Common Questions

Still unsure? Call (310) 415-7759 and talk to the team that packs your orders.

Does FDA registration mean a warehouse is FDA approved?

No. The FDA does not approve or certify facilities through registration. Registration means the facility is on record with the FDA.

Do supplement brands need an FDA-registered warehouse?

Facilities that hold food, including dietary supplements, for US consumption are generally required to register. Brands should confirm their specific obligations with a regulatory advisor.

Is FDA registration the same as GMP certification?

No. Registration and good manufacturing practice requirements are separate. A registered facility should not be assumed to hold any other certification.
