Dropshipping is a way of selling online without holding inventory. The seller runs the storefront and marketing, and when an order comes in, it passes the order to a supplier or manufacturer that ships the product straight to the customer.
The seller never touches the product, and only pays for goods after a customer has bought them.
A dropshipping order usually works like this:
Dropshipping lowers the cost of starting a store, since there is no inventory to buy upfront. The tradeoff is control. The seller usually cannot choose the packaging, add inserts, check quality or guarantee shipping speed, and margins tend to be thin because the supplier sets the cost.
For brands building their own products, that lack of control matters. A cosmetics brand that wants consistent branded unboxing, batch tracking and fast delivery generally needs its inventory in a warehouse it can direct. That is the core difference between dropshipping and using a 3PL: with a 3PL, the brand owns and controls its inventory, and the 3PL ships it to the brand's standards.
Some brands use both, dropshipping slow-moving or oversized items while keeping core products in a 3PL.
Brands considering the switch should also think about inventory investment. Holding stock means buying it upfront, but it also allows better unit costs from manufacturers, faster delivery and full control over how each product reaches the customer.
