What Is a Distribution Center?

A distribution center, often shortened to DC, is a facility that receives large quantities of goods and sends them onward to other points in a supply chain. Retailers use distribution centers to restock their stores, receiving full trucks from suppliers and sending mixed loads out to each location.

When a brand sells to a large retailer, it often ships to that retailer's distribution center rather than to individual stores.

How It Works

Distribution centers are built for volume:

  • Goods arrive in full pallets or truckloads.
  • Inventory is often cross-docked or stored briefly before moving on.
  • Outbound shipments go to stores or regional hubs, usually by freight.
  • Deliveries are scheduled by appointment and follow strict labeling rules.

Why It Matters for Ecommerce Brands

The terms distribution center and fulfillment center are sometimes used interchangeably, but the difference matters when planning operations. A fulfillment center ships many small orders to consumers. A distribution center moves fewer, larger shipments to businesses.

For an ecommerce brand entering retail, the retailer's DC becomes a new destination with its own rules. A beauty brand selling to a chain might need to book a delivery appointment, label each carton a specific way and send an advance ship notice before the truck arrives. Missing those steps can lead to refused deliveries or chargebacks.

Brands that work with a 3PL able to ship both parcels and retail orders can serve consumers and retailer DCs from one inventory pool.

Retail DC deliveries are also usually larger and less frequent than parcel shipments, so brands need to plan inventory carefully. Shipping a big retail order without leaving enough stock for online customers can create stockouts on the brand's own website.
