Dead stock is product that sits in the warehouse with little or no sales. It might be an old colorway, a discontinued flavor, a seasonal item past its season or simply something that never found its audience.
Unlike slow-moving inventory, which still sells occasionally, dead stock has effectively stopped moving and is unlikely to recover without action.
Dead stock builds up when brands overorder, misjudge demand, launch too many variants or change packaging and leave old versions behind. Products with expiration dates can turn into dead stock fast if they are not rotated and sold in time.
The best way to find it is to review sales by SKU over a set period, such as the last 90 or 180 days, and flag anything with no or very low sales relative to its quantity on hand. For example, a brand might discover 800 units of a holiday gift set still in storage in March, with only a handful sold since January.
Dead stock costs money every day it sits. It takes up storage space that you are paying for, ties up cash that could fund bestsellers and may eventually need to be written off.
Common ways to clear it include discounts, bundling slow items with popular ones, using units as free gifts or samples, selling to off-price or wholesale buyers and donating. Preventing dead stock starts with smaller, more frequent purchase orders and regular SKU-level reviews.
