What Is Cost Per Order?

Cost per order is a metric that shows how much a brand spends, on average, to fulfill each order. It turns a monthly set of warehouse and shipping invoices into one number that can be compared to average order value and product margin. It is one of the clearest ways to see whether fulfillment is helping or hurting profitability.

How It Works

The basic formula is total fulfillment cost for a period divided by the number of orders shipped in that period. Brands often calculate it two ways:

  • Warehouse cost per order: receiving, storage, pick and pack, packaging and other 3PL fees divided by orders.
  • Total cost per order: warehouse costs plus postage, divided by orders.

For example, a brand ships 1,000 orders in a month with an average of two items per order. At $1.50 per order plus $0.35 per additional item, pick and pack totals $1,850, or $1.85 per order. If storage, receiving and packaging add another $600, warehouse cost per order is $2.45. Adding average postage gives the total cost per order. The brand can then compare that figure to its average order value to see what share of revenue goes to fulfillment.

Why It Matters for Ecommerce Brands

Cost per order helps brands set free-shipping thresholds, price bundles, evaluate 3PLs and spot rising costs early. Because storage and fixed fees are spread across orders, cost per order often falls as volume grows and rises in slow months. Tracking it monthly, and segmenting by channel or order type, shows where changes such as larger bundles, different packaging or better inventory planning would have the most impact.

Common Questions

Still unsure? Call (310) 415-7759 and talk to the team that packs your orders.

What should be included in cost per order?

At minimum, pick and pack, storage, receiving and packaging. For a full picture, include postage and any returns or special project fees.

Why does cost per order change month to month?

Storage and other fees are spread across orders, so slower months typically raise cost per order and busier months lower it.

How can a brand lower its cost per order?

Increasing items per order, optimizing packaging to reduce postage, clearing slow inventory and comparing 3PL pricing structures can all help.
