A case pack is both the box and the count. It refers to the standard quantity of a single SKU that a manufacturer packs into one shipping case. If a supplier packs 24 bottles of shampoo in every box, the case pack is 24.
Case packs are used throughout wholesale and retail, where buyers often order in full-case quantities instead of individual units.
Manufacturers set case pack quantities based on product size, weight and how retailers prefer to buy. Each case is usually labeled with the SKU, the quantity inside, a case barcode and often the lot number.
When a warehouse receives cases with consistent case packs, it can count the cartons and multiply rather than count every unit. For example, 40 cases of a serum with a case pack of 24 equals 960 units. Retail orders may also be placed in case-pack multiples, so a retailer ordering 72 units receives exactly three cases.
Case packs can contain inner packs, which are smaller groups of units inside the case, and several cases may be shipped together in a larger master carton or on a pallet.
Consistent case packs make receiving faster and more accurate, lower handling time and make wholesale orders straightforward. Mixed or inconsistent case quantities slow everything down because staff have to open and count each box.
When working with a manufacturer, agree on a case pack quantity that fits your channels, label every case clearly and keep one SKU and one lot per case whenever possible.
