A carrier pickup is the collection of outbound packages by a carrier at the shipper's location. Warehouses and high-volume shippers often have scheduled daily pickups, where a carrier truck arrives at a set time to load the day's parcels. Smaller shippers may request pickups on demand or drop packages off at a carrier location instead.
Scheduled pickups happen at a regular time each business day. The warehouse plans its work so that orders received before the cutoff are packed, labeled and staged by carrier before the truck arrives. Once the carrier scans the packages, tracking updates from label created to in transit, and the carrier is responsible for moving them through its network.
Warehouses that ship with several carriers often have multiple pickups each day, sometimes at different times. The last pickup of the day effectively sets the order cutoff time.
Carrier pickup timing is what makes same-day shipping possible. If orders are not ready when the truck arrives, they wait until the next day, which adds a day to every customer's delivery time.
For example, a brand that packs orders in-house might miss the pickup on busy days and see orders slip to the next day. Working with a fulfillment provider that has reliable daily pickups and plans picking around them helps keep shipping consistent. Brands should also understand that tracking often shows label created until the pickup scan, which can prompt customer questions if pickup is delayed.
