What Is a Bin Location?

A bin location is the address of a storage spot inside a warehouse. It can be a shelf bin, a slot on a rack or a section of a pallet position. Each location has a unique code, so the warehouse system knows precisely where every unit of every SKU lives.

Location codes usually follow a pattern based on the layout, such as aisle, rack, shelf and bin. A code like B-04-3-C might mean aisle B, rack 4, shelf 3, bin C.

How It Works

When inventory is received and put away, staff scan both the product and the bin location label. The warehouse management system then links that quantity of the SKU to that location. When an order comes in, the system tells the picker which location to visit, and the picker scans the bin and the item to confirm.

Warehouses decide which products go where based on size and sales speed. Fast movers are often placed in easy-to-reach bins near packing stations, while slower items go higher or farther away. Small, fast-moving products like lip balm or socks fit well in shelf bins, while bulk stock sits on pallets in reserve.

  • Every location has a unique, scannable code.
  • Fast movers belong in easy-to-reach bins.
  • Scanning at putaway and picking keeps locations accurate.

Why It Matters for Ecommerce Brands

Accurate bin locations are what make fast, correct picking possible. If an item is in the wrong spot, a picker wastes time searching or, worse, picks the wrong product.

Bin locations also affect storage costs. Many 3PLs charge by the bin or by the pallet, so understanding how much space your products take helps you forecast your monthly bill and keep inventory levels sensible.

FAQ

Common Questions

Still unsure? Call (310) 415-7759 and talk to the team that packs your orders.

What is the difference between a bin and a pallet location?

A bin is a smaller shelf storage spot for loose units, while a pallet location holds a full pallet of stock, often used for bulk or reserve inventory.

Can one SKU be stored in more than one bin location?

Yes. Fast-selling SKUs often have a pick bin plus reserve stock in another location that is used to refill the pick bin.

How do bin locations affect storage fees?

Many 3PLs price storage per bin or per pallet, so the number of locations your inventory occupies directly shapes your storage cost.
