An address correction fee is a carrier charge applied when a package's address is wrong or incomplete and the carrier has to locate the correct address to deliver it. Common causes include missing apartment or suite numbers, misspelled street names, wrong ZIP codes or outdated addresses. The fee amount varies by carrier and is updated periodically.
When a driver or sorting facility cannot deliver to the address on the label, the carrier tries to identify the correct one, for example by using its address records or contacting the recipient. If it succeeds, the package is redirected and the shipper is billed an address correction fee, often weeks later on the carrier invoice. If the address cannot be corrected, the package may be returned to the sender, adding return postage and a reship.
Most of these charges can be prevented before the label is printed.
Address correction fees are small individually but add up quickly across thousands of orders, and the related delays frustrate customers. A package that bounces back to the warehouse can mean a reship, a refund or a lost sale.
For example, a customer leaves off an apartment number on a holiday gift order. The carrier corrects it, the package arrives a day late and the brand pays an extra fee. Address validation at checkout would likely have caught it. Auditing carrier invoices for these charges helps brands find the root cause, whether it is a checkout setting or a specific customer segment.
