A 4PL, or fourth-party logistics provider, acts as a supply chain manager. Where a 3PL physically stores and ships goods, a 4PL typically sits above several logistics companies and coordinates them on the brand's behalf, often owning few or no warehouses of its own.
The term is most common among large retailers and manufacturers with complex networks spanning many suppliers, regions and transport modes.
A 4PL usually takes on planning and oversight work, such as:
Most ecommerce brands do not need a 4PL. A brand shipping a few thousand parcels a month from one inventory pool gets more value from a capable 3PL and a good set of software integrations than from an extra management layer, which adds cost and distance between the brand and the people packing its orders.
A 4PL becomes worth considering when a company runs several warehouses, factories and freight lanes and needs one party accountable for the whole picture. For example, a global consumer goods company might hire a 4PL to manage ocean freight from Asia, three regional 3PLs and retail replenishment across two continents.
Knowing the difference helps brands ask the right question: do we need someone to ship our orders, or someone to run our whole supply chain?
In practice, many growing brands start with a single 3PL and only revisit the question of a 4PL once they operate across several regions, warehouses or manufacturing partners. Until then, the simpler setup usually means faster answers and lower overhead.

Neither is better in general. A 3PL performs fulfillment work, while a 4PL manages other logistics providers, so the right choice depends on how complex the supply chain is.
Often not. Many 4PLs coordinate warehouses and carriers owned by other companies.
It can, but the added management layer rarely pays off for brands shipping from a single inventory location.
