3PL setup fees, sometimes called onboarding or implementation fees, are one-time costs a fulfillment provider may charge when a brand first starts working with it. They are meant to cover the work of getting an account running, from configuring software to preparing warehouse space. Some providers charge them, some waive them, and some bundle setup into other fees.
Setup work that may be covered by these fees includes:
Some providers also charge separate recurring platform or technology fees. For example, a brand comparing two 3PLs might find one with slightly lower pick fees but a one-time setup fee and a monthly platform fee, and another with no setup or platform fees. Over the first year, the second option may cost less overall.
Setup fees add to the upfront cost of switching or starting with a 3PL and can make the decision harder for a growing brand. They are worth asking about directly, along with any recurring platform, software or account management fees. Brands should also ask how long onboarding takes, since a slow setup can delay launches or leave a brand paying two providers during a transition.
