What Is 3PL Onboarding?

3PL onboarding is everything that happens between signing with a fulfillment partner and shipping the first orders. It covers connecting sales channels, setting up products, agreeing on packing rules and moving inventory into the new warehouse.

A smooth onboarding avoids shipping delays and keeps customers from noticing the change.

How It Works

Onboarding usually follows a sequence like this:

  • Kickoff: confirm pricing, timelines and a point of contact.
  • Integrations: connect the store and any other channels.
  • Product setup: load SKUs, barcodes, bundles and packing rules.
  • Inbound inventory: ship stock to the warehouse and have it received and counted.
  • Go-live: switch order routing to the new warehouse and monitor early orders.

Why It Matters for Ecommerce Brands

Onboarding is where most of the risk in a 3PL change sits. Missing barcodes, unclear packing rules or poor timing can cause stockouts or mis-ships in the first weeks.

For example, a brand switching providers before a holiday campaign might plan to send a first batch of fast-selling SKUs to the new warehouse while the old one finishes open orders, then move the rest once the new setup is running smoothly. That approach limits downtime.

Brands should prepare an accurate product list with SKUs and barcodes, document any special packing instructions, and agree on a go-live date with both the old and new providers. Asking for a clear point of contact during onboarding helps questions get answered quickly.

Early orders deserve close attention. Checking the first several days of shipments for accuracy, packaging and tracking updates helps catch setup issues while volumes are still manageable and before they affect many customers.
