A 3PL, or third-party logistics provider, is a company that handles physical fulfillment for another business. Instead of renting a warehouse, hiring staff and buying packing equipment, a brand sends its inventory to the 3PL, which receives it, stores it, and ships orders as customers place them.
Most ecommerce 3PLs connect directly to the brand's online store, so orders flow into the warehouse automatically and tracking numbers flow back to the customer.
The relationship usually follows the same cycle. The brand ships inventory to the warehouse, the 3PL receives and counts it, and units are put away into bins or onto pallets. When an order comes in, staff pick the items, pack them in the right box with any inserts, buy a shipping label and hand the parcel to a carrier.
For a growing brand, a 3PL turns fulfillment from a fixed cost into a variable one. A founder packing 300 orders a month in a spare room may find that, at 3,000 orders, packing takes over the week. Moving to a 3PL frees that time for product, marketing and wholesale growth, and gives access to warehouse systems that would be expensive to build alone.
The tradeoff is control. Brands should look closely at accuracy, cutoff times, contract terms and how clearly fees are itemized before choosing a partner.
Most brands start by comparing a few providers on the same sample order profile, such as average units per order and monthly volume, so quotes can be compared fairly.
