FedEx 2027 Rate Increase: What Shopify Brands Will Actually Pay
FedEx's 2027 rate increase averages 5.9%, but Ground, Additional Handling and Delivery Area charges rise faster. Here is what changes on Jan. 4 and how DTC brands should budget.
Key Takeaways
- FedEx list rates rise an average of 5.9% on Jan. 4, 2027.
- FedEx Ground rises 6.06% to 6.15% across zones, and 1 to 5 lb Ground packages rise 6.49% on average, per Loop.
- Additional Handling rises about 7.5% and Extended Delivery Area Surcharges rise 9.09%, per Loop.
- UPS had not published a 2027 increase in the sources reviewed.
- USPS's temporary 8% parcel increase ends Jan. 17, 2027, with no replacement announced yet.
FedEx will raise standard U.S. list rates by an average of 5.9% on Jan. 4, 2027, but most ecommerce brands will pay more than that. Analysts at Loop found that five of FedEx's seven major services rise faster than the headline, FedEx Ground rates climb 6.06% to 6.15% across zones, and key surcharges such as Additional Handling and Extended Delivery Area rise 7.5% to 9%. UPS and USPS had not published 2027 parcel prices in the sources we reviewed, so treat FedEx's numbers as a planning floor, not a ceiling.
What Is Changing in the FedEx 2027 Rate Increase?
FedEx says standard list rates for U.S., U.S. export and U.S. import services will increase an average of 5.9% starting Jan. 4, 2027. Ground Economy, Ground Multiweight, International Premium and International Priority DirectDistribution rates also go up, along with minimum charges for U.S. and international package services. FedEx has not published a percentage for those individual services on its rate change page.
The changes arrive in three waves:
- Jan. 4, 2027: new list rates, surcharge and fee changes, and updated Delivery Area and Pickup Area Surcharge ZIP code lists.
- Jan. 18, 2027: a new $25 Paper Document Fee when a trade document is provided in non-electronic form, a $5 Paper Air Waybill Fee on U.S. domestic and export shipments started with manual paper airbills, and a Residential Delivery Charge on qualifying international shipments to the U.S., Canada and select countries.
- Feb. 1, 2027: zone classifications change for select U.S. domestic origin and destination ZIP code pairs.
The zone change matters for a Los Angeles shipper. If a ZIP pair you ship to often moves up a zone, that lane costs more even before the rate increase.
Why Will Most Brands Pay More Than 5.9%?
The 5.9% figure is a blended average across services. Your real increase depends on which services, weights and zones you actually use. Loop's analysis, reported by Supply Chain Dive and Logistics Management, breaks it down:
- FedEx Ground: up 6.06% to 6.15% across all zones.
- FedEx Ground, 1 to 5 lbs: up 6.49% on average. This is the weight band where most skincare, supplement and apparel orders land.
- 2Day A.M.: up 6.65%.
- First Overnight: up 6.01%.
- Standard Overnight: up 5.16%.
- Express Saver: up 3.09%, which pulls the blended average down.
- Minimum charges: rise faster than base rates on four of five services Loop reviewed.
Loop also pointed out that many accessorial discounts are written as a percentage off published rates. When the published surcharge goes up, the dollars you pay go up too, even if your discount percentage stays the same.
As a simple illustration, a 6.49% increase on a $10.00 Ground label adds about $0.65 per package. Run that across your actual monthly volume to see the budget impact.
Which FedEx Surcharges Go Up in 2027?
Surcharges are where small and mid-size brands often feel the biggest jump. Figures below come from FedEx data published by Supply Chain Dive and Logistics Management:
- Residential delivery (U.S. package services): $6.95 to $7.35.
- Delivery Area Surcharge, residential: $6.60 to $7.00.
- Delivery Area Surcharge, commercial: $4.45 to $4.70.
- Extended Delivery Area Surcharges: up 9.09%, and extended Ground DAS up 8.11%, per Loop.
- Additional Handling (U.S.): Logistics Management reports a range of $29.50 to $40.75 rising to $31.75 to $43.75, depending on zone. Supply Chain Dive lists the weight-based Zone 2 charge rising from $46.00 to $49.50. Loop estimates Additional Handling rises about 7.5% across every zone and trigger.
- Oversize (U.S.): $255 to $330 rising to $270 to $355, depending on zone. For FedEx Home Delivery in Zones 3 and 4, the charge goes from $275 to $290.
Your contract may price these differently, and the two trade publications report Additional Handling under different triggers. Check the FedEx 2027 surcharge and fee changes document, linked from the FedEx rate changes page, against your own agreement.
Has UPS Announced Its 2027 Rate Increase?
Not in the sources we reviewed. Supply Chain Dive reported on Sept. 21, 2026 that UPS had not yet announced a 2027 increase. A ShipAid article dated Oct. 22, 2026 also did not cite an official UPS 2027 figure. For reference, UPS's 2026 general rate increase averaged 5.9% and took effect Dec. 22, 2025. Treat any UPS 2027 percentage you see online as a forecast until UPS publishes it.
What Happens to USPS Prices in January 2027?
On March 25, 2026, USPS announced a time-limited 8% increase to base postage on Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage and Parcel Select, effective April 26, 2026. USPS says that increase ends at midnight Central Time on Jan. 17, 2027, after which it will decide whether a different long-term approach is needed.
USPS has not said what replaces the 8% increase. That date also lines up with the end of holiday peak pricing, so mid-January USPS parcel prices for lightweight cosmetics and supplement orders are an open question. Watch the USPS newsroom for a filing before you lock 2027 shipping budgets.
How Should Shopify Brands Budget for 2027 Shipping?
- Re-rate your own shipments. Dave Sullivan of ShipScience told Logistics Management that shippers should budget from their own shipping profile, not the 5.9% headline. Pull a few months of label data and apply the new rates by service, weight and zone.
- Focus on 1 to 5 lb residential Ground. For most DTC beauty, supplement and apparel brands, this is the bulk of spend, and it is rising faster than average.
- Audit packaging. Additional Handling and Oversize charges climb in 2027. Right-sized cartons and poly mailers keep orders out of those brackets.
- Check Delivery Area exposure. FedEx is publishing new ZIP code lists. Compare them with where your customers live.
- Review service levels. If you use 2Day for orders that can tolerate an extra day, compare Express Saver, which rises only 3.09%.
- Rate shop once UPS and USPS publish. The cheapest carrier for a 2 lb package in 2026 may not be the cheapest in 2027.
- Revisit checkout pricing in January. Adjust free-shipping thresholds or flat rates after you know your new per-order cost.
